Author: Alfonso Domingo.
On his arrival in Spain in 1518, King Charles I brought with him a large number of Flemish nobles and clerics as advisors and, in addition, began to demand new tax burdens to support his election as Emperor, which exacerbated the already existing conflict in the provinces of Castile. Finally, after a year of fighting, the Comuneros were defeated in the countryside of Villalar on 23 April 1521 and their main leaders, Padilla, Bravo and Maldonado, were executed.
The book Comuneros, written by Alfonso Domingo tells the story of love and war five hundred years ago. The story of María Pacheco and Juan de Padilla, and of the communities of Castile – in 2021 and 2022 the V centenary will be commemorated – a love story that survives war and time, at a time of political and social upheaval that is very similar to the times in which we live.
The year 1526, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, future glory of Spanish letters, visits his sister María Pacheco, who lives in exile in the cathedral of Oporto. María, the widow of Juan de Padilla, kept the Communist flame alive in Toledo for nine months after the defeat at the Battle of Villalar in 1521, until she had to go into exile in Portugal. The siblings, who shared that happy childhood in the Alhambra in Granada, play a game of chess through which they recall all the events of the war of the communities that took place years before.
