The tenor Plácido Domingo and the Spanish journalist Carmen de Carlos have been awarded the “Ibero-American Personality of the Year 2022” prize by the Organization of Ibero-American Journalists (OPI).
The awards were presented last Wednesday at a gala event held at the Ateneo de Madrid, which coincided with the 25th anniversary of the founding of the OPI, promoted, according to its president, Álvaro Julio Martínez, at the Ibero-American Summit in Margarita Island (Venezuela) in 1997.
Placido Domingo, who was unable to collect his award because he was in Spain, sent a video in which he expressed his gratitude for the award and underlined the importance of the OPI in defending the work of journalists.
For her part, Carmen de Carlos, currently editor-in-chief of International for El Debate and who was a correspondent for thirty years for the ABC newspaper in Buenos Aires and South America, recalled that during that time she had the opportunity to interview 42 Latin American presidents.
At the same gala, the distinction of Ibero-American Personality 2022 was awarded to the Rector of the Universidad Bicentenaria de Aragua, in Venezuela, Basilio Sánchez Aranguren; to the Vice Rector of the Universidad Santa María, also in Venezuela, Carlos Enrique Peña: Spanish lawyer, postgraduate professor and OPI Vice-President Cayetano Núñez Rivero; thinker Hakerman Salcedo Mata; Oswaldo Muñoz, founder of the Miami-based Grupo Editorial El Venezolano; Los Angeles urologist Dr. René Sotelo; and Sammy Sosa, former Dominican Major League Baseball player.
