The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, met yesterday at La Moncloa with the President of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, with whom he discussed “the great global challenges, such as the fight against climate change and the need to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals”.
According to Moncloa, Sánchez and Gates also spoke about “Spain’s commitment to global health; the donation of vaccines against HIV/AIDS, an issue to which both leaders are committed; and the need to strengthen multilateral structures to be prepared for possible future pandemics”.
They also discussed “the food crisis and the energy crisis, aggravated by the war in Ukraine”, and agreed on the need to deepen the collaboration between the Government of Spain and the Gates Foundation in the field of innovation in the energy sector. In particular, the two sides discussed the possibility of cooperating on accelerating the ecological transition, deepening the links between climate and security, and on interconnections and smart grids.
Gates was also received by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, with whom he had an “excellent meeting” on “the importance of public-private partnerships in cooperation for health, gender, climate adaptation and energy transition and security,” Albares reported via his Twitter account. “The work of the Gates Foundation converges with Spain’s commitments and action in the world,” he added.
