The Navantia Training Centre (NTC), in San Fernando (Cádiz), hosted last 10th and 11th the assembly of ‘Sea Defence’, a project funded by the European Defence Industrial Development Programme 2019 (EDIDP) in which all the major European shipyards are participating.

‘SEA Defence’, formally launched at the end of 2020, aims to strengthen the European defence technological and industrial base and increase the EU’s technological autonomy and leadership.

It aims to develop a feasibility study to provide a roadmap for the maturation and integration of technologies to be included in the next generation of naval platforms.

The study will include recommendations for the maturation of the most promising technologies that will represent a significant change in the capabilities of Naval Forces in future warfare scenarios, Navantia reported.

SEA Defence is being developed in a collaborative context of major European naval shipyards, including Damen, Naval Group, Fincantieri, Navantia, SAAB Kockums, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, and Lurssen Defence. Some of the sector’s strategic companies such as TNO, MARIN, Odense Maritime Technology, and the Naval Technology Centre (Murcia) are also participating as main partners.

The project is supported by several EU Member States, ensuring that the results of the project will lead to real next generation naval capabilities that will effectively support European naval forces against potential future threats.
