‘The Jewish Reality in the History of Spain and its Diaspora’ is a unique work that, according to its author, Uriel Macías, and its editor and director of Biblioteca Sefarad, José Jiménez Salazar, “tries to bring readers closer to the reality of the Jewish presence in Spain and its Diaspora”.
The singularity of the work, which has involved an arduous task of cataloguing and selecting more than 400 books -out of a total of 2,000- printed and published from the 15th to the 20th century, is that it includes the possibility of consulting the vast majority of these incunabula, written in languages as diverse as German, Greek, English, Yiddish and, of course, Spanish, digitised through a QR code.
The work is divided into five chapters – ‘Jews in Spain’, ‘Sephardim’, ‘The Inquisition’, ‘Anti-Judaism’ and ‘Miscellaneous’ – which summarise the history of the Jews in Spain and aim to help the reader, even the non-specialist, to understand a little-known part of our history.
The first presentation of ‘La realidad Judía’ took place last Wednesday at the Marcial Pons bookshop in Madrid, and a second presentation will be held on 24 May at 19:00 at the Royal Academy of History.
