The Diplomat
The Ukrainian Ambassador to Spain, Serhii Pohoreltsev, received the Medal of Honour of Madrid awarded by the City Council of the capital to the Ukrainian people, on the occasion of the celebration of San Isidro.
On receiving the distinction, in the Palacio de Cibeles, from the Mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, Pohoreltsev insisted on the request to the Spanish government for support for Ukraine’s entry into the European Union.
The ambassador recalled that “more than 84% of Spaniards, according to surveys, support the idea of this integration, and affirmed: “This is a very large number, and I hope that the Spanish government will take into account the decision of its own people”.
He therefore reiterated his call for support to hand over the candidate status for EU membership at the European Council on 23 and 24 June.
Pohoreltsev thanked the Madrid City Council for “all the support for Ukrainians and those who are arriving from Ukraine because of the war, giving them shelter, housing, food, medicine…”.
“I want to thank the humanitarian aid sent and organised by the City Council. Just from the warehouses in the town, where we were with the deputy mayoress (Begoña Villacís), they have sent around 500 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Ukraine. I am very grateful for all this support”, he said.
