The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation yesterday condemned the “disproportionate use of violence” by the Israeli police at the funeral of Palestinian-American journalist Shirín abu Aklé, who was shot in the head during her coverage of a clash between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank on Wednesday.
“The scenes that took place are totally unacceptable,” said the Foreign Ministry in a publication on its Twitter profile, reported by Europa Press, in reference to what happened last Friday in Jerusalem, when Israeli security forces charged at the bearers of the coffin with the mortal remains of the journalist as soon as the coffin was taken out of the French Hospital of Saint Louis.
The foreign ministry also demanded “a transparent investigation into the events leading to the death” of Abu Akle – an Al Jazeera journalist – who was finally buried on Friday in a cemetery on the outskirts of Jerusalem’s Old City.
Israel has so far admitted the possibility that the journalist was killed by a shot fired by its own forces, but said it could not reach any conclusions without the bullet that killed the reporter, which is in the possession of the Palestinian prosecutor’s office.
