The President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, will travel next week to Spain, where he will be received by the King and will hold a meeting with the head of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, as confirmed yesterday by the spokesperson of the Casa Rosada, Gabriela Cerruti.
As The Diplomat reported yesterday, Fernández had been trying for some weeks to carry out a tour of several European capitals, including Madrid, but difficulties in balancing his agenda with those of the leaders with whom he wished to speak led to the postponement of the trip.
However, in the last few hours the initiative was resumed, even at the cost of limiting the countries Fernández intended to visit, which included, in addition to Spain, Germany, France, Portugal, as well as Brussels to meet with the heads of the European Union.
In the end, according to Cerruti, the trip will be limited to Spain and Germany, where Fernández will have the opportunity to meet for the first time with the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz.
As far as Spain is concerned, the Argentinean President is expected to make his institutional contacts on Tuesday, 10 March. In Madrid, he will be received at the Zarzuela Palace by His Majesty the King, and will meet at La Moncloa with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, with whom he is very close, and with whom he has already met on several occasions.
Fernández also plans to meet with Spanish businessmen, probably on Monday, the day of his arrival in Madrid, as one of the objectives of his tour of Europe is to obtain foreign investment for Argentina.
The last time Alberto Fernández was in Spain was a year ago, in May 2021, also as part of a tour of several European capitals, and later, in June, Pedro Sánchez travelled to Buenos Aires. At the end of October last year they spoke again during the G-20 summit held in Rome.
The Argentine president, who also wants to find out about the situation in Europe and the repercussions that the war in Ukraine could have for his country, is undertaking this tour at a time when, internally, his disagreements within the government with Vice-President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner have increased.
On Tuesday, Fernández will travel to Berlin to meet with Scholz on Wednesday, before returning to Buenos Aires on Thursday.
