The European Parliament yesterday endorsed a resolution supporting the conclusions of the Conference on the Future of Europe and pledged to prepare for the reform of the EU Treaties.
The European Parliament held this week in Strasbourg the seventh plenary session of the Conference on the Future of Europe, in which the final conclusions of this initiative were approved. The Spanish parliamentary delegation was made up of MPs Pere Joan Pons, from the Socialist Group; Pablo Hispán, from the Popular Group; Lucía Muñoz, from the Confederal Group of Unidas Podemos-En Comú Podem-Galicia En Común; and Josune Gorospe, from the Basque Group (PNV).
The resolution, approved by a show of hands, considers that “the ambitious and constructive proposals” made by the Conference require changes to the Treaties on issues such as simplifying the institutional architecture of the Union and improving transparency and accountability in the decision-making process. The plenary therefore asked the Committee on Constitutional Affairs to prepare proposals for the reform of the Treaties, to be adopted in a Convention, as provided for in Article 48 of the EU Treaty.
The Conference on the Future of Europe started in March 2020 and has involved the European institutions and the citizens of the European Union. In this last plenary session, not only the final proposals and positions adopted by the components of the European Parliament, the Council, the Commission and the national Parliaments were addressed, but also the position of the citizens, collected through the multilingual Digital Platform launched in April 2021, was presented. Next May 9, Europe Day, the three co-chairs of the Executive Committee will present the final report of the Conference to the presidents of the EU institutions during a closing ceremony in Strasbourg.
