The President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, is trying to arrangee a new visit to Spain as part of a tour of several European capitals, The Diplomat has learned.
In recent days, difficulties in balancing Alberto Fernández’s schedule with those of the leaders he will visit on the tour led to the decision to postpone the European tour, which would take him to France, Germany, Portugal and Brussels to meet with the main leaders of the European Union, in addition to Spain.
Now it seems that the Casa Rosada has taken up the idea again and is trying to schedule the dates for the tour, given President Fernández’s interest in securing European backing, at a time when the country’s economic situation is difficult and relations with Vice-President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner are becoming increasingly strained at home.
If the visit to Spain goes ahead, it could take place in the first days of next week, and Alberto Fernández would be received by the King and would meet with the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, with whom he is very close.
The last time the Argentine president visited Spain was a year ago, in May 2021, also as part of a tour of several European capitals, and subsequently, in June, Pedro Sánchez travelled to Buenos Aires.
