The Council of Ministers yesterday appointed diplomat Ramiro Fernández Bachiller as Spain’s new ambassador to Poland, as The Diplomat had advanced.

Fernández Bachiller is one of the diplomats appointed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, to cover the fifty or so embassies that are expected to change their holders during the course of this year. The new ambassador replaces Javier Sanabria, who had been in the post since October 2017.

Born in Madrid on April 26, 1962, Fernández Bachiller holds a degree in Law with a major in Public Law from the University of Seville and entered the diplomatic career in February 1989. He has been Ambassador of Spain to Romania and Moldavia, with residence in Bucharest, and Ambassador of Spain to Gabon and the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, with residence in Libreville.

In the Central Services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs he has held, among others, the functions of ambassador in Special Mission for the 2010 Spanish Presidency of the EU Council and ambassador in Special Mission-director of the Consular Emergency Unit between 2013 and 2014. Since October 2018 he was the chief inspector general of the General Inspectorate of Services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The new ambassador arrives in Warsaw at a particularly complicated time due to the Russian invasion in neighboring Ukraine. Poland is one of the countries that has received the most Ukrainian refugees since the beginning of the conflict, with more than 2.9 million people, according to UNHCR data. Precisely, Warsaw will host tomorrow an international donors’ conference for Ukraine organized by the Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, and the Prime Minister of Sweden, Magdalena Andersson, in collaboration with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, postponed a working visit to Poland last week due to the parliamentary vote on the decree-law on measures to deal with the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, and Moncloa is already working on finding an early date for the trip. Albares visited Poland in mid-March and the President of the Congress of Deputies, Meritxell Batet, visited in mid-April.
