Ángel Rivero and Edurne Uriarte Bengochea coordinate the book El futuro del centro-derecha en Europa (The future of the centre-right in Europe), which aims to present a comparative overview of the situation of centre-right parties in Europe.
If in the past there was justified talk of a crisis of the European social democratic parties, especially since the 2008 crisis, today, after the loss of government by the German CDU in the elections of 26 September 2021, we can speak of a similar crisis on the centre-right. But to analyse these parties it is necessary to define them. Centre-right parties are those that defend the European (EU) project, liberal democracy, the market economy and the welfare state. Basically, these parties are found within the European People’s Party, although they may not be due to their country’s own party structure.
The ideological currents that make up these parties are Christian democracy, liberalism and conservatism. It is important to note that these parties may have changed over time, may be new, and in some cases may even have disappeared. Furthermore, only those parties with sufficient weight to be true national political actors, with significant electoral representation, with experience of government or with the capacity to achieve it, are considered worthy of analysis.
