Michael Oyugi has been appointed by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta as Kenya’s new ambassador to Spain, where he will replace Richard Angulu Opembe, who held the post from January 2020.
Oyugi was, until his appointment, Director of Consular Affairs and Diaspora at the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after having been, between 2013 and 2018, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations International Organisations in Vienna.
A graduate in Diplomatic Protocol from the Diplomatic Academy of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Internationales de Paris, Michael Oyugi also holds a degree in International Relations and French Language from the University of Nairobi (Kenya) and speaks five languages, including Spanish.
Throughout his professional career, he has been, among other things, Director of Africa and African Union in the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has participated in the peace negotiations in South Sudan in 1993 and 1994. He has also been stationed in Ethiopia, Switzerland and France.
