Laurent, a brigade commander in the Étretat gendarmerie, plans to marry Marie, his partner and mother of his daughter, nicknamed Poulette. Despite his daily confrontation with social misery, he loves his job. However, his life is turned upside down when he accidentally kills a farmer who threatens to commit suicide.
