On the occasion of the commemoration of the VIII centenary of the birth of Alfonso X the Wise, this afternoon at 6 p.m. the Centro Sefarad-Israel and the Museo Sefardí of Toledo present the virtual exhibition The Jews in the court of Alfonso X, a vision of the event according to the collections belonging to the Museum of Toledo.
The director of the Museo Sefardí of Toledo, Carmen Álvarez, will be in charge of presenting this exhibition. The figure of Alfonso X the Wise is fundamental to understand many aspects of the history, culture and science of our country. People from different places, cultures and religions lived together in his court, including the Jews. The presence of the Jews in the Peninsula enriched the knowledge and wisdom of their time, but they also faced various religious, social and legal problems.
The exhibition revolves around four main themes: the historical contextualisation of the court of Alfonso X, the monarch and his time; the social and legislative aspects of the time, which provide a better understanding of the situation of the Jewish community on the peninsula; the role of the Jews at the king’s court, analysing aspects related to the School of Translators or their relationship with Muslim culture, and their great importance as astronomers, translators, poets and illuminators; and the city of Toledo as a paradigm of the cultural and inter-religious relations of the time.
