Tomorrow Thursday at 7 pm at Fnac Callao, the Oficina Económica y Cultural of Taipei in Spain, in collaboration with Ediciones SM, presents the book by Taiwanese illustrator Pei-Hsin Cho (in the photo) entitled El pescador y su alma (The Fisherman and His Soul), based on a story of the same title by Oscar Wilde, which has won the International Illustration Prize of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and SM Foundation 2021. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.
El pescador y su alma is a picture book to which Pei-Hsin Cho was immediately attracted because in this story the emotions are presented in a complex way told by the protagonist, which makes it more human than many other stories. Therefore, the author tried to be faithful to the original, but gave it a personal twist after analysing its essential personality.
Pei-Hsin Cho is particularly interested in the process of playing with composition on paper and telling such an eventful story in very few pages. In the words of the author “Oscar Wilde wrote a beautiful story to talk about the relationship between love, body and soul that makes me reflect on how we make our daily decisions based on these events”.
Pei-Hsin Cho is a Taiwanese illustrator and animator based in London. She holds a BA in Animation from Taipei National University of the Arts and is currently studying for an MA in Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art in London. Her work has a narrative base that revolves around sentimentality and introspection, combining traditional and digital media to depict a truth of inner feelings that attempt to subtly transcribe emotions into images.
