The Diplomat
Last Monday the Centro Sefarad-Israel presented the book El Holocausto y la España de Franco (The Holocaust and Franco’s Spain), by Enrique Moradiellos Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Extremadura and full member of the Royal Academy of History. The Holocaust is unanimously considered the worst crime in the history of humanity. The attitude of Franco’s dictatorship in this regard is little known and often misunderstood.
The book shows that, contrary to the official propaganda about the “Judeo-Masonic conspiracy” and the anti-Semitic impulse of no small part of the military hierarchy, Franco’s attitude oscillated between indifference, passive collaboration and aid to the persecuted Jews, especially, but not exclusively, those of Sephardic origin, some of whom were granted Spanish nationality by Primo de Rivera’s decree.
