The Spanish government has asked the Jordanian authorities for the agrément to appoint diplomat Miguel de Lucas as ambassador to Amman, sources told The Diplomat.
Miguel de Lucas was until Monday director general of Centro Sefarad-Israel, an institution where he worked for fourteen years, and which he has been replaced by Jaime Moreno Bau.
Due to his connections with the Jewish world, in diplomatic circles, there was speculation a year ago that he might be appointed ambassador to Israel, but in the end, the person chosen for the post was Ana Salomon, who had been the first director of Centro Sefarad-Israel.
Now, the government has decided to send him to Jordan to replace Arantxa Bañón, who has held the post since May 2017.
Miguel de Lucas has been a diplomat since 1993 and, throughout his career, has held second posts at the Spanish Embassies in Nigeria and Cameroon and has been posted to the Embassy in Paraguay.
The government had pending, since last year, to carry out the replacements in the Embassies in Jordan, Lebanon and Gabon and had called for a competition to appoint new ambassadors in those countries, but no decision had been taken. At present, as The Diplomat has already reported, the executive is awaiting the granting of the agrément for Jesús Santos Aguado in Beirut and Ramón Molina Lladó in Libreville.
