Bangladesh’s ambassador to Spain, Mohammad Sarwar Mahmood, expressed on Monday his desire that “bilateral relations with Spain continue to grow” and “to this end”, he added, “we are working closely to explore more avenues of collaboration and consolidate existing ones”.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Bengali ambassador had words of gratitude in this regard since, as he recalled, “Spain was one of the first countries to recognize Bangladesh after it gained its independence”.
Since then, as Mahmood explained, bilateral relations between the two countries have been growing at a steady pace, making Spain the fourth largest export destination in the world for Bangladesh, which in turn is Spain’s fourth largest trading partner in Asia.
For his part, the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Asia and the Pacific, Javier Salido, stressed that this anniversary “should not only serve to celebrate but to lay the foundations that will allow us to further deepen our relations”.
Relations that both described as “excellent” and which may soon add a memorandum of understanding on sports, which is already being worked on with the collaboration of the Spanish Higher Council of Sports. Salido also announced that both countries are also working on several investment and intellectual property protection agreements.
