Author: Juan Carlos Unzué.
In 2019, the former football goalkeeper of teams such as Sevilla, Barcelona and Osasuna, Juan Carlos Unzué, was diagnosed with the disease called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and since then his life has been dedicated to raising awareness of this neo-degenerative disease that has no cure or treatment, and which patients who are diagnosed are given a life expectancy of between three and five years.
“There is still a game left”, Juan Carlos says to himself every time he faces the mirror, whenever he has the urge to measure himself, to prove himself, to convince himself, to see himself, to feel himself and to show himself. At the end of the day, it is about fighting, not giving up, doing what he has always done, defying adversity. He was never afraid of anything or anyone, not even of dying, because death is part of life. The book Una vida plena traces his career through some crucial moments, from his childhood in a very special family to the diagnosis of his illness, passing through the milestones of his career: his debut with Osasuna, Cruyff’s call, his consecration in Seville, his experience as a coach. The result is a portrait of a monumental man and sportsman, who has been able to draw from his experience in elite sport useful lessons for life and especially for dealing with his illness.
