Pedro Castillo still has not appointed a new Peruvian ambassador to Spain

Eight months after becoming President of Peru, Pedro Castillo has still not appointed a new ambassador to Spain.

Since the beginning of October, when the previous ambassador, Claudio Julio de la Puente, left his post, the embassy has been headed by a Chargé d’Affaires, awaiting Castillo’s decision.

It is customary in Peru that, with the arrival of a new president, all ambassadors cease to be ambassadors and are replaced. In fact, Castillo began by appointing several of them to important posts for Peru, such as those in the United States and even Venezuela, with which he re-established diplomatic relations that had been broken.

In diplomatic circles, it is striking that the Peruvian leader has not yet appointed an ambassador to Madrid, despite the importance of Spain’s investments in Peru and the large number of Peruvians living in our country.

Just a few days ago, it became known that Castillo had appointed Rolando Javier Ruiz Rosas Cateriano, a career diplomat, as his new ambassador to Paris. Castillo was criticised at home for the excessive number of ‘political’ ambassadors he was appointing.
