The head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, announced today at the Conference of Presidents held on the island of La Palma, that the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) will send a first humanitarian aid package of 23 million euros to Ukraine, which “represents the largest package ever sent to a single country”.

Sánchez also advocated promoting an immigration and asylum pact and solidarity in the distribution of refugees, and specifically in the distribution of unaccompanied minors. This week, the government announced three reception centres in Madrid, Catalonia and Alicante, in the Valencian Community. He added that the opening of a fourth reception centre for Afghan refugees in Malaga is under study.

With the 5,400 reception places in the state system managed by the government and the 12,800 places provided by autonomous regions and local councils, Spain is prepared to take in 18,200 Ukrainian refugees immediately.

Sánchez assured that the government will “guarantee” the autonomous communities the economic resources for the reception of refugees.
