The Diplomat
The Casa España-Nicaragua has been forced to suspend its activities at the behest of Daniel Ortega’s government, The Diplomat has been told.
The suspension coincides with a new episode of deterioration in relations between Spain and Nicaragua, following the Ortega regime’s decision to withdraw its ambassador in Madrid, Carlos Midence, alleging that he is suffering “pressures and threats of interference” that prevent him from carrying out his work. The Spanish government specified that the decision was a consequence of Managua’s refusal to accept the return of the Spanish ambassador, Mar Fernández-Palacios.
In a letter to its members, Martín Castrillo, manager of Casa España-Nicaragua, a social and sports club frequented by the Spanish colony, informs them that “in accordance with the indications of the Ministry of the Interior”, he is temporarily suspending his functions until further notice.
The manager adds that they are working to “normalise operations as soon as possible”.
Sources in the Spanish community told The Diplomat that the suspension of Casa España-Nicaragua’s activities is related to attempts by the Nicaraguan authorities to place a board of directors sympathetic to the Ortega regime.
