Lecture: ‘Women in Migration’ at Instituto Francés in Madrid
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Theatre of the Instituto Francés in Madrid presents next Friday at 19.30 the conference Women in Migration, in collaboration with Casa de Velázquez and the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies. Attendance is free of charge, but registration is compulsory until full capacity is reached.

Through an artistic and scientific approach, this conference proposes to address the experience of women in migration, considering, from a feminist point of view, the resistances and liberations that they generate in our societies. The speakers will highlight the trajectories of women from various countries, including Ecuador, Morocco, Senegal and Venezuela. Speakers will include Carmen Ayala, painter; Daniela Delgado Viteri, video artist; María Hernández Carretero, anthropologist; Emmanuelle Hellio, sociologist; Thomas Posado, PhD in political science; and Paul Bernard-Nouraud, art historian.

According to the United Nations, women account for 51% of migration flows. Often accompanied by their children, they are less and less reluctant to go alone. However, women’s migration is a journey fraught with pitfalls. They face physical, sexual and psychological violence. Once they arrive in the host country, their situation remains complicated. Harsh working conditions, social exclusion and the exploitation to which they are subjected are their daily routine.
