During the months of March and April, Casa Árabe is dedicating its film programme in Madrid to Mauritanian cinema, with the cycle Between the Desert and the Sea, to complement the vision of contemporary cultural production in that country, which also provides content for the exhibition Memories in Movement. Contemporary Art from Mauritania, which has been on show at the Cultural Diplomacy Centre since the end of February.
This selection includes the most emblematic film of Mauritanian cinema, Heremakono (in the photo), whose director, the filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako, is one of the most charismatic personalities on the continent. Also scheduled for Women’s Week is the documentary Waiting for Men by director Katy Léna Ndiaye, a film that was critically acclaimed at the time of its release.
The film Oh, Sun is a classic of African cinema and a benchmark in denouncing slavery and the conditions of the migrant population in Europe. Cheikh N’diaye’s Malouma, Diva of the Sands, a documentary about the well-known Mauritanian singer, one of the most internationally acclaimed voices on the country’s music scene, completes the selection of feature films. The programme also includes two recently produced short films that reflect their authors’ concern for the conservation of the environment and respect for nature. The cycle has been produced with the support of the African Film Festival of Tarifa. The entire programme can be consulted in this pdf.
