The Diplomat
Her Majesty the Queen took advantage of a public event yesterday to express her support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, following the invasion of that country by Russia.
Doña Letizia took part in the award ceremony of the 10th call for social projects of the Mutua Madrileña Foundation and, aware of the interest that the clothes she wears usually arouse, she chose for the occasion a ‘sorochka’, also known as ‘vyshyvanka‘, which is a traditional Ukrainian blouse, white, with ornaments in brown and orange tones.
The Diplomat is told that the Queen did not have this garment in her wardrobe and, after the Russian invasion, she bought the blouse at a flea market in Madrid, where Ukrainian women display their creations.
As it was not scheduled for Doña Letizia to make a speech at the event -although she did say a few impromptu words afterwards-, she chose to express her support for Ukraine with her gesture, something the King had already done last Sunday, in Barcelona, at the dinner to inaugurate the Mobile World Congress.
The King and Queen have never officially travelled to Ukraine, although they did have the opportunity to receive the former Ukrainian president, Petro Poroshenko, in Madrid in June 2018, who, accompanied by his wife, made a working visit to Spain.
