Centro Cultural Coreano reopens its cinema with ‘Kim Ji-young: born 1982’

In celebration of International Women’s Day, next Tuesday 8 March at 19.30, the Centro Cultural Coreano will reopen its cinema screenings with the film Kim Ji-young, born 1982, directed by actress Kim Do-young and based on the novel of the same name by the writer Choi Nam-joo. As a novelty, a copy of the novel will be given to each attendee as a gift to help them get to know the film better.

The film is an indictment of male chauvinism in South Korean society. In Korea, the expression ‘mamchung’ means ‘parasitic mother’ and is often used by people who feel uncomfortable and criticise mothers who are breastfeeding or caring for their babies in public places. Kim Ji-young opposes this kind of attitude and rejects this social prejudice that is still present in the world.

The film tells the story of Kim Ji-young, a woman in her thirties who is married, has a daughter and finds it very difficult to find a job. Like so many other women, she suffers discrimination at home, at school and at work. One day she begins to act strangely, apparently possessed by her deceased mother and grandmother.

The screening (V.O.S) will take place in the Multipurpose Hall of the Centre. Admission is free with prior reservation at this link.
