The Asylum and Refuge Office of the Ministry of the Interior has stopped processing asylum applications with unfavourable results for Ukrainian citizens, while waiting for the European Union to activate the directive to receive all refugees in solidarity as a response to Russia’s invasion, which is expected to take effect next Thursday.
According to sources from the Interior Ministry, the Asylum Office will not process any denial of international protection for Ukrainian citizens due to the war situation in the country as a result of the attack ordered by Vladimir Putin.
In this way, Spain is temporarily suspending the processing of those international protection cases that could lead to an unfavourable outcome.
According to data from the Asylum Office, between January and December 2021, 1,335 applications for international protection from Ukrainian citizens were admitted, and 568 were favourably resolved.
Ukraine ranks thirteenth among the countries with the most nationals requesting international protection in Spain last year, in a list headed by Venezuela with 15,090 applications.
