Acciona Energía has won its first project in Peru to build a 131.1 megawatt (MW) wind farm in San Juan de Marcona, in the department of Ica, which will require an investment of close to 158 million euros, reports Europa Press.
The acquisition and construction of this plant, whose work will begin in April and will be fully operational by the end of 2023, is the first step for Acciona Energía’s entry into the Peruvian renewable generation market, as reported to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).
Acciona Energía’s new renewable facility will consist of 23 wind turbines with a planned capacity of 5.7 MW, which will produce energy equivalent to 608 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year, capable of supplying 478,000 Peruvian homes.
From an environmental point of view, the San Juan de Marcona wind farm will prevent the emission of some 275,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year. It will also form part of Acciona Energía’s Social Impact Management programme, which reinvests part of the annual income from its facilities to improve training, welfare and environmental management in the communities where it operates.
The project’s connection to Peru’s National Interconnected Electricity System (SEIN) will be made through the construction of a 220 kV transmission line of approximately 33 kilometres, which will connect to the Marcona substation.
“We are excited about this first project in Peru. Our goal is to become a player that contributes decisively to accelerating the energy transition in Peru, displacing the use of fossil fuels through the development of 100% renewable projects,” says José Ignacio Escobar, general manager of Acciona Energía for South America.
With this project, the company is advancing in its growth process in South America, where it is already present in Chile with close to 1,000 MW of operational capacity, and in Brazil, where it has recently acquired a portfolio of wind projects under development with up to 850 MW of capacity.
