Iberdrola will deploy a ‘mega investment plan’ to boost offshore wind power in Massachusetts (United States) with the investment of more than 10 billion dollars (about 8,791 million euros) in the development of three complexes of this technology, the company said.
Iberdrola’s chairman, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, presented the investment in a meeting with the governor of Massachusetts, Charlie Baker, in which he also explained the group’s growth plan in the United States for the period 2020-2025, which will enable it to double its renewable generation capacity and boost the country’s decarbonisation.
Galán pointed out that these projects “will be essential to achieve the US goal of reaching 30,000 megawatts (MW) of wind energy by 2030, and with them we will generate industrial development and employment”.
The energy company executive also held a meeting with Maura Healey, Attorney General of Massachusetts, to whom he also conveyed Iberdrola’s commitment to investment in clean energy in the state.
With this investment effort in offshore wind in Massachusetts, Iberdrola reaffirms its commitment to the United States, despite the setback it suffered at the end of last year after the New Mexico state regulator overturned Iberdrola’s purchase of PNM Resources, a decision appealed in court by the group, which has been given until 2023 to complete the transaction.
In Massachusetts, the group is developing 2,800 MW of offshore wind in three different projects and is also carrying out an interconnection line with a capacity of 1,200 MW to transport hydroelectric power from Canada.
Together, these projects will cover 35% of the State’ s electricity demand with clean and competitive energy while helping to create around 4,000 jobs during their construction over the next few years.
