The Government has sent nine officers of the Special Operations Group (GEO) of the National Police to Kiev, with the mission of protecting the Spanish Embassy in Ukraine.

The police officers arrived in the Ukrainian capital on Tuesday with the aim of reinforcing the security of the diplomatic representation, given the possibility of an armed conflict if Russia invades Ukraine.

The GEO is the National Police’s elite unit for complex missions and its agents usually provide protection to embassies in countries where there are terrorist threats or where there may be situations of risk for diplomatic representations or their workers.

So far, the government has not decided to withdraw diplomatic personnel stationed in Ukraine, although it has recommended that Spaniards living in the country return to Spain on commercial flights.
