The Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Mipymes of the Dominican Republic, Victor Bisonó, chaired yesterday in Madrid the first meeting of the bilateral Working Group to promote trade and investment.

The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters, has allowed “to advance in the consolidation of bilateral economic relations: trade, investment, business and financial,” Maroto stated through his Twitter account. “In the framework of our Agenda in Spain, we have left inaugurated the Joint Working Group between both countries as a collaboration mechanism to enhance development opportunities in trade, investment and productive chaining,” Bisonó said through the same social network.

“We recall the success of joint work on issues of digitization and industry 4.0. We also agreed to collaborate on issues of trade in services, e-commerce and designations of origin,” the Dominican minister continued. “On behalf of the Dominican Government led by Luis Abinader, we reiterate our commitment to continue fostering and strengthening relations of cooperation and friendship that generate prosperity and development for both countries,” he added. After opening the meeting of the Working Group, both ministers held a bilateral meeting.

Víctor Ito Bisonó will participate today in the Spain-Dominican Republic Business Summit, organized by the Ministry of Commerce, the CEOE and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce. The meeting, which will take place at the CEOE headquarters in Madrid, will bring together, in person and virtually, businessmen from the two countries and the institutions and business organizations of the Dominican Republic that make up the Follow-up Committee for the work prior to the XIV Ibero-American Business Meeting, which will be held on the island within the framework of the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit. The Follow-up Committee was created during the meeting of Foreign Ministers held in Santo Domingo at the end of November.

Yesterday it was announced that a large Spanish company, Técnicas Reunidas, has been nominated as preferred contractor by Generadora San Felipe for the development of a 400 MW combined cycle plant in the Dominican Republic, where it has already signed a contract for the start of preliminary work.

The project, based on advanced General Electric technology, will convert an old power plant by replacing liquid fuel with natural gas, which will substantially increase its energy efficiency and contribute to the decarbonisation of the Dominican electricity system.
