More than 60% of the 1,650 Afghans who sought international protection in Spain when they left their country after the Taliban came to power six months later have been granted refugee status by the Asylum and Refugee Office, sources from the Ministry of the Interior told Europa Press.

The Asylum and Refugee Office has processed 1,650 applications for international protection from Afghan citizens between August 2021 and 8 February 2022.

According to data from the Interior Ministry’s office, a total of 1,037 applications have been favourably resolved with the granting of refugee status six months after the evacuation of some 1,900 Spanish collaborators, who fled the country in haste.
