Indra reinforces surface security at two South Korean airports

Korean Airport Corporation has implemented Indra’s InNOVA tower system as part of the Jeju International Airport expansion project that is currently underway, after previously implementing it at Incheon (Seoul).

The system, called Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE) in Korea, enhances the safety and efficiency of ground operations by providing air traffic controllers with a complete view of aircraft, vehicles and other moving objects, reports Europa Press.

The solution offers automation and enhanced safety alerts over other systems in its class, especially when it comes to eliminating false alarms.

“Our system is already in use at Incheon Airport in Seoul, as well as at many of the world’s largest airports. In Incheon, we were able to minimise the time required for installation, which was critical to the project,” said Indra’s head of international sales, Tomas Lubeck, in a statement.

The Jeju-Seoul route has been the busiest route in the world for several years, with 85,880 flights in 2021, equivalent to an average of 235 flights and 48,000 passengers.

Indra is supplying KAC with InNOVA tower systems, 13 controller positions and a Terma surface radar system. The delivery also includes contingency systems. The contract was signed by the consortium comprising Indra, Hanjin Information Systems and Telecommunications, which is responsible for the infrastructure, and ERA, which is installing the multilateration sensor system (MLAT).
