Albares applauds António Costa’s victory in Portugal and says there is “a social democratic moment” in Europe

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, yesterday applauded the electoral victory achieved last Sunday in Portugal by the leader of the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS), António Costa, stressing that this triumph, added to the German chancellorship, shows that “it is a social democratic moment for Europe”.

Albares, who spoke to the media at the entrance to the Senate’s Ibero-American Affairs Committee, pointed out that Portugal “has rewarded a reliable government”, which, in his opinion, “is tackling the Covid crisis, both in terms of health and the economy”.

For this reason, the minister launched the “much broader” reflection that this is “a social democratic moment for Europe”, because, he said, the Covid-19 crisis requires “what social democrats have in their DNA”: “the defence of public health, leaving no-one behind and tackling the health and economic crisis with European funds”.

Costa was congratulated on Sunday by the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, who said on his Twitter account: “Portugal has once again opted for a social democratic project that combines growth and social justice. Together we will continue to promote in our countries and in Europe a socialist response to the challenges we share”.
