The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, received yesterday the new U.S. Ambassador to Spain, Julissa Reynoso.

“The US is a partner for Spain, a good friend and Europe’s natural ally,” the minister declared through a Twitter message in which he reported the meeting. “We have a solid relationship,” he added.

Julissa Reynoso presented her Copies of Style last Tuesday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a day after arriving in Madrid. Reynoso thus takes over the diplomatic representation, replacing Minister Counselor Conrad Tribble, who became Chargé d’Affaires in January 2021, at the end of the mandate of the previous ambassador, Duke Buchan.

The ambassador can already carry out many of her duties in Spain, although, in order to be able to do so fully, she must present her Letters of Credence to the King when a new ceremony is convened for the month of February, at the earliest. The last one took place on the 13th.

The new ambassador arrived in Madrid on Monday, accompanied by her son, Lucas, and her two dogs, Celeste and Kika, according to her biography on the Embassy’s website. Upon her arrival, Reynoso made a brief statement in which she expressed her satisfaction at being in Spain and her desire to “work on deepening our historic relations, which have existed since the founding of the United States.” He added: “As President Biden has stated on several occasions, the United States is back to act according to the values that have always defined my country”.

Reynoso, 46, emigrated from the Dominican Republic to the United States at the age of seven, was educated at Harvard, Cambridge (UK) and Columbia and at 37 became the youngest U.S. ambassador in U.S. history. She is also the first woman to head the U.S. Embassy in Spain.
