The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) has activated its humanitarian collaboration agreements with the NGOs Caritas and Farmamundi to help populations in need in Ukraine and Ethiopia.

On the one hand, AECID will provide 150,000 euros to Caritas for an emergency intervention in areas not controlled by the Ukrainian government in Donetsk and Luhansk, which will provide access to drinking water to an estimated population of 2,200 people (36.5% men and 63.5% women, 18% of whom are disabled).

The population of Donetsk and Luhansk suffers from serious problems of access to water, sanitation and hygiene, especially affecting households with vulnerable members (elderly, people with disabilities or special needs). According to Caritas, 51% of households assessed in that area have access to only one water source, making them particularly vulnerable to disruptions or interruptions in supply, and 71% of households report problems with the quality of drinking water.

On the other hand, AECID has activated the emergency agreement with Farmamundi and will contribute 75,300 euros to this NGO for the provision of basic health services to some 15,000 people in Afar, one of the most vulnerable regions of Ethiopia and home to more than 76,000 people displaced by the armed conflict in Tigray.

Specifically, the action financed by Spanish Cooperation will provide basic health care for some 15,500 people for three months, of whom 7,035 are women and girls, and 8,465 men and boys. The project includes special attention to the sexual and reproductive health of women and girls and the training of health personnel in the care of survivors of gender-based violence and the identification of cases of emotional and physical abuse.
