The Dean of the Instituto de Empresa School of Global and Public Affairs (IEGPA), Manuel Muñiz, and the Ambassador of Turkey, Burak Akçapar, on behalf of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum – ADF, signed last Thursday a Letter of Intent in Madrid to promote a partnership between the two institutions.

With this Letter of Intent, IE joins the network of partners such as the Munich Security Conference, the European Policy Centre, the Institute for International Justice, Comexi, the Doha Forum and the Rajaratnam School of International Studies, among others.

The Antalya Diplomacy Forum – ADF is a high-level gathering on international affairs, bringing together political leaders, diplomats, opinion leaders, business people, media, academics and students who practice, monitor or study diplomacy and international affairs.

The Forum facilitates discussions on regional and global issues of critical importance to the practice of diplomacy and foreign policy. It not only fosters interactions that help refine policy, but also has a penchant for identifying emerging issues and trends, including related technologies. Participants engage bilaterally and multilaterally at the same time.

The theme of the inaugural ADF was Innovative Diplomacy: New Era, New Approaches. It was held from 18-20 June 2021 with the participation of more than 2000 attendees. The Forum hosted 11 heads of state and 45 ministers, along with secretaries-general and other high-level representatives of international organisations. ADF 2022 will be held under the auspices of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Turkey, from 11-13 March 2022 in the Mediterranean coastal city of Antalya.

This year’s ADF will address international affairs in its entirety under the theme Recoding Diplomacy. This is a new concept that, according to the Forum, could capture the ongoing process of revitalising diplomatic solutions to existing problems and issues and refining tools and methods to that end. In this regard, the Forum notes that competition, discord and even conflict are constants in international affairs, but diplomacy is indeed transforming. Its language and methods are changing. Changes in the relationship between the state and the individual, as well as technological innovation, require attention. To do so, diplomacy must remain innovative, efficient and effective. At the same time, it requires joint efforts at reassessment, reassertion and restoration, i.e. recodification.

As last year, a significant number of Heads of State and Government, ministers, policy makers, diplomats, business leaders, academics, think tanks, youth and media representatives have confirmed their participation in ADF2022.
