International law professors of the stature of Marcelo Kohen and Antonio Remiro Brotóns will meet at Casa América on Thursday 3 February at 5:30 p.m. to debate the principles of international law concerning the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas, commonly known as the ‘Malvinas Question’.

Marcelo Kohen is Professor of International Law at The Graduate Institute in Geneva, a full member and Secretary General of the Institut de Droit International, a scientific association that promotes the development of International Law and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1904. Antonio Remito Brotóns holds a PhD in Law from the University of Bologna and is Professor of Law and International Relations at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He is also a member of the Institut de Droit International and of the Spanish delegation of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Guillermo Carmona, Secretary for Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic of the Argentine Foreign Ministry, will accompany the debate and will speak on the geopolitical issues surrounding the islands and their evolution throughout this dispute, which dates back to 1833. Other specialists in international law, professors of law and international relations from various Spanish universities, Spanish government officials, ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Spain will also take part in the discussion. Likewise, from other Communities in Spain and from Argentina, it will be possible to follow the live broadcast of the debate on Casa de América’s YouTube channel.

During the debate, the photographic exhibition Malvinas, the other face of the Islands, by nature photographer and conservationist Matías Romano, will be on display. It is a selection of images of the natural beauty of the islands and fauna of the South-West Atlantic.
