The Venezuelan government has created a “commission for the clarification of the historical truth, justice and reparation for colonial rule and its consequences” in the country, as announced on Tuesday by the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro.

n a meeting with popular artists in the presidential palace of Miraflores, the Bolivarian leader explained: “It is a commission to search for the truth of European colonialism, here, in this land: its crimes, its genocide, the looting that took place, and to demand justice and reparation from Spain, Portugal and all of Europe for Latin America”.

Maduro recalled that this is “a historical commission” that he proposed last October 12, day in which, every year, Venezuela commemorates the “indigenous resistance”. Then, Maduro sent a letter to His Majesty the King to request that “they apologize to the peoples of the Americas for the crimes and genocide committed and that a reparation process be carried out”.

The Venezuelan president insisted that, to achieve this goal, it is necessary to make “a historical investigation” and “a great effort of education”, and informed that the commission will be chaired by the Venezuelan Minister of Culture, Ernesto Villegas, and integrated by a score of politicians, historians, writers, researchers, anthropologists, philosophers and leaders of cultural movements in Venezuela.
