The Diplomat
The Greek Ambassador in Madrid, Yannis Tzovas Mourouzis, will leave his post on Wednesday 26th, after having represented his country in Spain since October 2019.
Well versed in the Spanish language and reality, Yannis Tzovas Mourouzis, has developed in the two years that he has been in Spain an intense activity in favour of relations between the two countries. In recent months, he has had to deal with the disagreement between Madrid and Athens, after Spanish-Turkish military cooperation, which was highlighted at a summit between Spain and Turkey, caused unease among the Greek authorities and forced the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, to travel to Greece.
After finishing his mission in Spain, Yannis Tzovas Mourouzis will take up his new post as Greek ambassador to Brazil at the beginning of February.
To replace him as head of the Greek embassy in Madrid, the Greek government has appointed Ilias Fotopoulos, who until now held the post of director for Europe in the Greek foreign ministry, after having been ambassador to Cyprus and Montenegro.
Fotopoulos is a veteran diplomat who joined the Greek Foreign Service in 1988 and has been posted in Spain years ago, as well as in other posts in Germany and Ukraine.
Spain also recently changed its ambassador in Athens, with Carles Casajuana replacing Enrique Viguera.
