Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau yesterday canceled his official visit to Spain, scheduled for today, after testing positive for COVID-19.
“Due to the positive SARS-CoV-2 test result, Minister Zbigniew Rau has canceled his visits to Spain and Malta,” Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Lukasz Jasina reported yesterday via his official Twitter account. “Minister Rau will soon be performing his duties in accordance with the procedures for such situations,” he added.
“The visit of the Polish minister, Mr. Rau, is cancelled after he tested positive for COVID,” the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported. Rau was scheduled to meet today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, at the Palacio de Viana, after which the two were to hold a joint press conference.
The visit was to take place at a particularly delicate moment for Warsaw in the eyes of the other European partners, after the Polish Constitutional Court on October 7 affirmed the prevalence of the Polish Constitution over the EU legal order. The European Commission has initiated a sanctioning process against Poland for violating the rule of law and a good part of the Member States have denounced the authoritarian drift of the country’s leaders.
