The Mexican government has chosen Claudia Pavlovich, a former governor of Sonora and a member of the opposition PRI party, as new consul general in Barcelona.

Pavlovich’s appointment comes at a time when Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is waiting for the Spanish authorities to grant the approval he requested nearly three months ago to appoint the former governor of Sinaloa, Quirino Ordaz, as his new ambassador to Spain.

The choice of Ordaz and Pavlovich, both members of the PRI, has caused quite a stir in Mexico, especially within that party, and in the Mexican foreign service, which is increasingly seeing López Obrador appointing politicians to embassies and consulates.

The post of Consul General in Barcelona is considered important by the Mexican authorities, as the country has economic interests in Catalonia. In fact, Mexico’s previous ambassador to Spain, Carmen Oñate, held the post, having been posted as consul in Barcelona.
