The Council of Ministers yesterday approved the agreement authorizing the signing and provisional application of the air transport agreement between Spain and the Dominican Republic. The authorization coincides with the visit to Madrid of the president of the Caribbean country, Luis Abinader.

The text of the Agreement on Air Transport between the Kingdom of Spain and the Dominican Republic, initialed in Aqaba (Jordan) on December 2, 2019 on the occasion of consultations held between the aeronautical authorities of both countries, establishes the legal framework that provides coverage for air links between the two countries, bringing it into line with Community regulations.

Likewise, it includes the usual formula of this type of bilateral agreements on air services and includes in its articles the administrative clauses recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to its member States. It also includes the standard principles and clauses established and required by the EU, as it is an agreement of mixed competence between Spain and the Union.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is interested in signing the Agreement during the International Tourism Trade Fair (FITUR), which will take place in Madrid from today until January 23 and will have the Dominican Republic as a partner.

Precisely, President Luis Abinader has been in Madrid since Monday to carry out an intense agenda of activities and work meetings within the framework of FITUR. The president was received at the Adolfo Suárez-Barajas airport by the Spanish ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Antonio Pérez Hernández; the Dominican ambassador to Spain, Juan Bolívar Díaz; the King’s aide-de-camp, Javier Escrig; the secretary general of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Zurab Polikashvili; and the Dominican ambassador to the UNWTO, Aníbal de Castro. Accompanying the President are the Administrative Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, and the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, among others.

Abinader, who will return to his country on Friday 21, will be received today by King Philip VI with a lunch at the Zarzuela Palace. His agenda also includes meetings with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and with the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez Almeida, and his attendance at the 42nd edition of FITUR, which will be inaugurated today by the King and Queen of Spain, with the participation of 107 countries and almost 7,000 companies. On Friday, Abinader will participate in a breakfast offered by the Dominican Ministry of Tourism to journalists attending FITUR.
