A delegation of European Commission officials will make a technical visit to Gibraltar and Campo de Gibraltar between today and tomorrow.
This visit has come about as a consequence of the ongoing negotiations for the future relationship of Gibraltar with the European Union. According to the Commonwealth of Municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar, the EU delegation will remain today Tuesday 18 and tomorrow Wednesday 19 in the area to learn about the operation of the Verja de Gibraltar and the port and airport of the Rock from the point of view of existing police, customs and border controls.
“It is hoped that experiencing the area at first hand will provide a better understanding of its unique nature to all concerned,” the Rock Government said in a press release. “The visit will also provide the opportunity for the United Kingdom and Gibraltar to continue their internal discussions before the next negotiating round as well as for subsequent engagement with Spain which is ongoing and at different levels,” it continued.
For his part, the president of the Commonwealth of Municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar, Juan Lozano, showed yesterday his confidence that the technical delegation of the European Commission take the current model of fluidity of passage through the Verja de Gibraltar as an example for the future agreement between the UK and the EU, as reported by the local newspaper Europa Sur.
