The European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Janusz Wojciechowski, yesterday once again praised the quality of Spanish meat, following the debate that has been sparked in Spain by statements made by the Minister for Consumer Affairs, Alberto Garzón, in a British newspaper.

“As a European Commissioner and as an EU food safety auditor, there is no reason to say that Spanish meat is of lesser quality, because it meets the same production standards as other EU foodstuffs, and I hope that this is enough to conclude this debate that has been opened,” said Wojciechowski at a press conference following his meeting with the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas.

On his first visit to Spain, the Polish Commissioner acknowledged that the size of farms and macro-farms is being debated throughout the EU.

“The CAP reform aims to offer alternatives to the domination of large farms. This reform is not against meat producers, we want to go for sustainable production, the key is sustainability. With the CAP reform we have more instruments and tools than in the past,” he said.
