Alonso Berrio replaces Pablo Rupérez, who had been in the post for six months under Juan González-Barba, who was dismissed in mid-December as State Secretary for EU, after serious disagreements with Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares became apparent.
A diplomat since 1994, Miguel Alonso Berrio has been deputy director general for European Union countries since last September, after having been assigned as ‘number two’ in the Spanish embassies in Austria, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. He was also at the Permanent Representation of Spain to the International Organisations in Vienna and had already held the post of Deputy Director General for EU Countries between 2010 and 2012.
