Until 15 January, the Fundación Carlos de Amberes presents an exhibition that brings together in 56 cartoons the incisive and complementary views of the cartoonists El Roto and Chumy Chúmez on journalism, its uses and abuses, manipulations and lack of freedom.
The cartoons share a critical and intelligent approach to information and propaganda. They are drawings that seek reflection from a conceptual point of view that, supported by critical distance and calm, manages to overcome the immediacy of ephemeral and obvious news and prevents the fulminating news from distorting the analysis of reality. The work of Chumy Chúmez was published on page 3 of the newspaper Madrid between 1967 and 1971, that of El Roto in El País between 2016 and 2021.
The exhibition is part of the programme of activities organised by the Fundación Diario Madrid and the Asociación de Periodistas Europeos, thanks to the sponsorship of the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the closure order of the newspaper Madrid, decreed on 25 November 1971.
