The Council of Ministers yesterday approved the National Program for the Resettlement of Refugees in Spain for the year 2022, which provides for the reception of up to 1,200 people over the next year.
The Council of Ministers annually approves the National Resettlement Programs for refugees from countries affected by conflicts and serious humanitarian crises. The Government of Spain’s commitment to this program is included in the global resettlement priorities identified by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the European Union. The Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration is responsible for providing reception under the International Protection Reception System.
Two arrivals to Spain from Lebanon from countries in conflict are already scheduled to take place during the first quarter of 2022, with a total of 658 people. The reception system is articulated around own places (in the Refugee Reception Centers, CAR) and centers managed by entities with state funding, with a capacity of more than 10,000 places throughout the national territory.
Within the framework of the National Resettlement Plan, staff of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration received 116 resettled persons, nationals from Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq and coming from Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan, last December 15 at Barajas Airport (Madrid).
“The Government of Spain confirms with the approval of this new program a firm commitment to refugees, which will be maintained throughout 2022,” assured the Council of Ministers. “Thus, during the next year, six missions of selection of refugees by the Ministry of Inclusion are planned, including modalities of online interview of families if health conditions would prevent physical displacement,” it added.
