Since last October, the musical A Chorus Line has been performed with great success at the Teatro Calderón in Madrid, in a production by Antonio Banderas’ Teatro Del Soho Caixabank.
The action begins in a Broadway theatre in the mid-1970s. The show begins in the middle of an audition for a new musical production. The director, Zach, and his assistant, Larry, test the candidates. Seventeen of them compete in the elimination round.
But the hardest part is yet to come: Zach is looking for a strong chorus of four boys and four girls, and before making his final decision, he wants to know more about the candidates. So he asks them to introduce themselves and talk about themselves. With some reluctance, they all end up talking about their past. Through the musical numbers we learn about their dreams and best-kept secrets, until the climactic number, One, where the individual personalities of the dancers merge into a new, collective identity, that of the Chorus, forming a company that seems to have no end.
